Eyelid Lumps and Bumps

The eyelids have thin, delicate skin and many small glands, so lumps, bumps and patches are common. Most are harmless, but because eyelid lumps involve both the skin and the eye, they are best examined by someone who looks at both.

Common eyelid lumps and patches

  • Styes and chalazia: lumps caused by infected or blocked glands (see styes and chalazia)
  • Cysts: small, smooth, often clear or skin-coloured bumps
  • Xanthelasma: soft, yellowish patches near the inner corner of the eyelids, sometimes linked to cholesterol levels
  • Skin tags and warts (see skin tags)
  • Moles and other pigmented marks

Why an assessment helps

Most eyelid lumps are benign. However, a lump that is growing, bleeding, crusting, losing eyelashes, or not healing needs to be checked. Dr Ratu is a GP with Extended Role in both Ophthalmology and Dermatology and can examine the lid, the eye and the skin together.

What happens at the assessment

Your history and symptoms are reviewed, the eyelid is examined closely and the eye surface may be checked with a slit lamp. Dr Ratu will explain what he finds and discuss monitoring, treatment, removal or onward referral. See Minor Surgery.

When to seek urgent help

Seek same-day help if the eyelid is hot, swollen and red with fever, or if there is any change in vision or eye pain.

How Dr Ratu can help

Dr Guy Ratu is a GP with Extended Role (GPwER) in Ophthalmology and Dermatology, so he can assess both the eye and the skin around it. Use the Contact Us page or the Contact us button to send an enquiry. Please do not send sensitive medical details by WhatsApp.
