Acne is one of the most common skin conditions. It can affect teenagers and adults, and it can have a real impact on confidence as well as on the skin itself. Effective help is available.

What is acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, red spots, pus-filled spots and, in more severe cases, deep painful lumps called nodules or cysts. It most often affects the face, but it can also affect the back and chest.

Common signs

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red, inflamed spots or pustules
  • Deep, painful lumps under the skin
  • Oily skin
  • Marks or scarring after spots heal

Treatment options

The right treatment depends on how severe the acne is, where it is, how long it has been present and whether it has caused scarring. Options can include a gentle skincare routine, over-the-counter and prescribed treatments applied to the skin, and, for some people, prescribed treatments taken by mouth. These need a proper clinical assessment, as the best choice varies from person to person. Picking or squeezing spots can increase the risk of scarring, so it is best avoided.

Acne scarring

Once acne is under control, some people want to improve the look of marks or scars. Options such as microneedling, chemical peels and laser treatments may be discussed at a cosmetic dermatology consultation.

When to seek help

See a doctor if your acne is painful, leaving scars, affecting your mood or confidence, or not improving with over-the-counter products. Seek advice promptly if you develop severe, deep or widespread acne.
